Evidence of human beings speaking can only be found about seventy thousand years ago at the earliest. The patterns inscribed in bones found in Blombos Cave in South Africa are considered to be the first symbolic representations created by humans.
The brain capacity of modern humans (1,400–1,600 cc) is about three times larger than that of gorillas. The human brain began to grow two million years ago (Homo habilis), and reached the size of the modern human brain four hundred thousand years ago (Homo hyderbergensis).
Humans gained the ability to speak as a result of their brains becoming larger; it was not words that caused the brain to enlarge.
