Locomotion in arboreal life

Long before the birth of humanity’s ancestors, primates evolved various features in the tropical forests of Africa.

Tree height in African tropical forests often exceeds 30 m, so primates needed to travel between trees vertically as well as horizontally.* They therefore evolved various locomotion techniques such as quadrupedal walking, hanging movements, and ground traveling. These locomotion styles differed between species, so the shape of limbs is also species-specific.

*Primates co-evolved with angiosperms (flowering plants) that appeared in the Cretaceous rainforests. Unlike the ferns and gymnosperms that had previously covered the earth, angiosperms extend their branches horizontally, forming aerial corridors in the forest.
