Settlement and territoriality

The increased attention given to food production and the management of land and resources resulting from settlement was accompanied by a growing territorial awareness and efforts to delineate, hold, and protect land. Furthermore, as the size of the population increased, it became necessary to expand the managed land, eventually encroaching on land managed by other groups, resulting in frequent inter-group conflict.
