Face-to-face communication and physical connections

Until words appeared, human communication was a combined expression of gestures and sounds. Such face-to-face communication is important in reading another person’s emotions and influencing them, and the eyes play a major role.* Along with music, face-to-face interaction with eye contact strengthened bonds among peers, enhancing their sense of unity and promoting cooperative action.

In this way, pre-language communication is thought to have played the role of an adhesive that strengthened personal connections.

*Human eyes have wide eyelids and a clear distinction between the colors of the white and the iris, so the movement of the eyes can be clearly detected. Among primates, the white portion of the eye is only found in humans, and it is possible to “read another’s thoughts” by observing their eye movement.
