Characteristics of primates that share food

Passive food sharing among adults is most frequently observed in great apes, and also in New World moneys living in Central and South America.

In both taxa, mothers are subject to a high child rearing cost, as great ape infants have a long growth period, and New World monkeys often give birth to twins or triplets.
