Empathy and the recovery of social capital

However, people are becoming anxious about the situation whereby individuals are separated and isolated. This is evidenced in the way that many young people are driven to attend sporting events and concert halls, where they can synchronize with others. The increasing trend toward participating in NGO activities to provide support to disaster stricken areas, and the sharing of goods and housing indicates that people are searching for reliable relationships that entail empathy.

No matter how safe our environment is, if we cannot trust people, we cannot create a safe society. We need to regain the social capital that was once secured by the family and community.
