The distribution of extant apes is mostly restricted to the rainforest “refugia*,” with the exception of some populations of common chimpanzees. Gorillas inhabit two large refugia in central Africa, and are divided into two species: western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) and eastern gorillas (Gorilla beringei).
