In Virunga, mother gorillas transfer alone to avoid infanticide

The pattern of female transfer in Virunga is different from that in Kahuzi, probably due to the occurrence of infanticide. In Virunga, if there are mature males in the original group, females often leave their children in the group and transfer alone.*

If mother gorillas move with their infants, the infants will be killed by males in the group to which they transfer. Therefore, they may leave infants to the putative father who will protect them.

*In eastern lowland gorillas in Kahuzi, on the other hand, among whom infanticide rarely occurs, females will often transfer with their own infants. This tendency does not change even if the original group contains a mature putative father of the infants.
