Apes: four genera and eight species

Great apes (family Hominidae) comprise four genera, which in turn comprise eight species:

・Orangutans (genus Pongo), which includes Borneo orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus), Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii), and Tapanuli orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis)
・Gorillas (genus Gorilla), which includes western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) and eastern gorillas (Gorilla beringei)
・Chimpanzees (genus Pan), which includes bonobos (Pan paniscus) and common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)
・Humans (genus Homo), which currently includes only our species (Homo sapiens)

Apes are genetically closer to humans than Old World monkeys, which include Japanese macaques and baboons.
