Food sharing in western lowland gorillas

Our expectations proved correct. In the 21st century, we began fieldwork to habituate western lowland gorillas in the Moukalaba-Doudou National Park in Gabon in Central Africa. In 2010 and 2013, we finally observed 18 cases of gorillas in a habituated group, named “Group Gentil,” sharing fruit.*

*The Fruit shared by the gorillas was Treculia Africana, a large fruit with a diameter of about 30 cm. When adult male silverbacks began eating the fresh fruit, females and juveniles looked at the male and tried to take pieces of the fruit. Although at first the males prevented the others from taking the fruit pieces, they subsequently allowed them to eat the fruit.
