Differences in diets determine the distribution of apes

These differences in feeding strategies may lead to the difference of distribution between gorillas and chimpanzees. During the glacial period, when tropical forests decreased, the ancestors of gorillas that had relied on leaves and bark spread their distribution onto high mountains, where the fruit production was low.

On the other hand, the chimpanzee ancestors, which depended on fruit and animals may have advanced into the woodlands and savannahs, where they could forage animals even in seasons when there were few fruits.
