Human eyes: horizontally flat with large whites

When comparing the eye shapes of various animals, the human eye has three distinctive features: the sclera* is white, the area of the sclera is large, and the eyes are horizontally flat.

These characteristics are thought to make it easier for humans to convey their gaze to others, and enhance their ability to communicate—for example, to convey their intentions.

*The sclera is the part of the eye other than the pupil and iris. In humans it is wide and white, but in many primates it is colored and narrow, making it difficult to detect their gaze or eye movements
