Bipedalism is not suitable for moving rapidly on the ground. Instead, this form of locomotion is very efficient when travelling at a slow speed of about 4 km per hour. If one walks slowly, bipedal locomotion consumes less energy than quadrupedal locomotion.
Bipedal walking is therefore suitable for traveling long distances, as when seeking for scattered food under the burning sun of the savannah, and for bringing the food back to the sleeping sites.
