■About Book
Where does our sociality come from? What is it? Where is it taking us? This book explores its secrets in the tens of thousands of years of human evolution. The key to unlocking secrets lies in the achievements of primatology from Japan.

“Evolution of Human Sociality(Vol 1. Primatology as a Study of Society)” provides a comprehensive college-level introduction to the study of primatology.

Humanity, especially the social nature of the human race, is at stake. Do you think that way?

The family, which has long been the most basic component of society, is now in danger of collapse. Such changes were caused and accelerated by globalism and the communication revolution.

The “family” formed by our human ancestors comprised the dual structure of family groups of related individuals, and a community made up of multiple families. The dual structure of family and community has been maintained by the high degree of empathy developed by humans. However, the family is now in danger of collapse. What will the human family and society be like in the future? Let us consider this question by “Evolution of Human Sociality(Vol 2. The Past, Present, and Future of a Society with Empathy and Family)”.

■QUATE

"In this book, we introduce the two different trends in primatology and adopt their respective strong points to examine the origin of human sociality. We need the causal approach to understand evolution, and human sociality may not be well explained without the perspective of relationalism. Human sociality cannot exist without the presence of the others, because the existence of an individual is created through the perspective of the others. Species-specific behaviors do not always emerge from encounters between genetic programs and environments. A wide variety of human social behaviors occur when each individual is entangled in the society created by the others, and they internalize the society. What kind of evolution has paved the way for this peculiar human society? In order to explore this, it is necessary to have two perspectives: from the societies of non-human primates, and from modern human society."(from Preface)

“The environment in the process of becoming part of a living thing is a sense an environment assimilated by the living thing (Environmentalization of the subject), and a living thing in fact handily takes its environment into itself (Subjectization of the environment).”

from『生物の世界 (The world of living things) 』by Kinji Imanishi (supplementary notes by Juichi Yamagiwa)
