Dian Fossey

The outbreak of the Congolese independence war forced a suspension of the research on gorillas. After the war, it was Dian Fossey who reopened the fieldwork on mountain gorillas in Virunga.

Travelling to the Congo in 1976, she succeeded in habituation of the gorillas, and established the Karisoke Research Center on the Rwanda side of Mount Bisoke. She is also known as the first human to be voluntarily touched by a gorilla.
