The spirit of service and the family

The earliest evidence of a person with a disability surviving for a long period of time was found in Homo erectus fossils dating from one hundred eighty million years ago, and fossilized bones of Neanderthals with severe disabilities, who could not have survived without care, have also been found. This could not have happened without the presence of a “spirit of service,” which likely originated in the family.

It is thought that empathic and collaborative abilities enhanced through food sharing and joint childcare developed into the spirit of serving the group irrespective of danger to oneself, and this, in turn, developed into the ability to migrate to new lands.*

*Around this time, it is thought that our human ancestors gradually began to hunt prey together as a group, and confront danger as a group. They then gradually left the African continent for cool, dry lands that they had never before experienced.
