Criticism of Goodall

In her book In the Shadow of Man, for example, Goodall wrote “It looked as if he was torn between desire and caution” (p. 85). Such anthropomorphic descriptions by Goodall were strongly criticized by Western behavioral scholars. However, like Goodall and Schaller, other Western researchers also chose to interpret the emotion of primates anthropomorphically, and felt it necessary to name primate individuals.
