ここまできちんと総説された霊長類社会の進化に関する著作は、私は大変に有用だと思う。研究者があまりに禁欲的なことに私はしばしば批判的になるが、本書については逆の印象を持つ。霊長類の生活の多くの部分が脳機能に依存しているとすれば、本書のような総説こそが、その具体的な解説になっているはずである。こうした研究が不十分だったことが、むしろマクロ的な意味での脳機能の研究を遅らせたといってもいいのである。」
