Multi-male groups are often observed in Virunga because sons may not leave their natal groups after they mature. In other words, the males in the multi-male group are fathers and sons.

On the other hand, in Kahuzi, both males and females leave their natal groups as they reach sexual maturity.

The difference in this male movement pattern is likely to be largely related to the presence or absence of infanticide.
