The life cycles of great apes

If we compare great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans), the differences in life cycle do not necessarily coincide with the differences in body size.

The female gorilla, who has the heaviest weight, has the youngest first birth age and the shortest inter-birth interval. Orangutan females have the slowest life cycle, but they are smaller than other apes.

In gorillas, it is their high degree of group orientation and the intensive caretaking of infants and juveniles by the males that are thought to cause their early life cycle.
