Gorilla “habituation” by George Schaller

Both Western and Japanese primatologists began fieldwork on mountain gorillas, but “food provisioning,” which was a successful technique with Japanese macaques, was not effective with gorillas, who never accepted the food provided by humans. However, George Schaller succeeded in demonstrating “habituation* ” by repeatedly presenting himself to gorillas without using food.
