In 1960, shortly before Dian Fossey began her research on gorillas, Jun’ichiro Itani encountered Jane Goodall in Tanzania while looking for site at which to conduct research on chimpanzees. Already engaged in chimpanzee fieldwork in the Gombe Forest, Goodall, surprisingly, named individuals, and sometimes used anthropomorphic expressions in describing their behaviors.
