Differential feeding strategies of gorillas and chimpanzees

Gorillas eat a large amount of leaves, and feed on a lot of bark when fruit is scarce. So gorillas may gradually shift their ranging areas so as not to deplete supplies of leaves and bark.

Chimpanzees, on the other hand, eat a lot of fruit, and forage animals such as insects and mammals during seasons in which fruit is scarce. Fruit and insects are food items which tend to be concentrated and patchily distributed, and knowledge of their location is important for foraging them efficiently. Consequently, chimpanzees are likely to use rather small areas repeatedly.
