The Potato washing behavior of Japanese macaques

In 1954, a four-year-old female Japanese macaque named Imo on Koshima Island, Miyazaki Prefecture, began carrying sweet potatoes from a sandy beach to a stream, and dipping them in the water before eating them. Later, Imo learned to use seawater to season food with salt. She took wheat that had been scattered on the beach and put it into the seawater, she then collected the floating wheat and ate it. This new behavior was gradually transmitted to the other members of the group. It was labeled “pre-cultural behavior” and it garnered international attention.
