The ecology of lowland gorillas and chimpanzees: surprising similarity

More recently, studies in African lowland forests have revealed that, in these areas where the two ape species coexist, gorillas also live in primary forests and dry mountains, and eat a large amount of fruit and insects, obtained by climbing trees—just like chimpanzees.

So, if the ecology of the two species is surprisingly similar in these areas, what makes it possible for them to coexist?
