Yakushima and Kinkazan: differences in environment

Yamagiwa began the habituation* of macaques on Yakushima in 1976. Other researchers began the habituation of macaques on Kinkazan in the 1980s. There are clear differences in the forest structure of the two islands. On Yakushima, various plant species with a low height grow at high density. On Kinkazan, on the other hand, the tree height is generally higher, but the species diversity and density are much lower than on Yakushima.
