When the studies on Japanese monkeys were first published, Imanishi’s methodology was initially severely criticized by Western researchers as “a bad method inviting anthropomorphism.”  However, the Japanese methodology used in the “research on social behaviors based on individual identification,” was gradually accepted, and it is now recognized as a standard technique in studies of animal behavior.
