Strategy of male macaques on Yakushima

Researchers subsequently confirmed that, on Yakushima, larger groups were dominant over smaller groups. As their home ranges are small, Yakushima macaques frequently encounter other groups. These encounters are often hostile. This suggests that males on Yakushima may allow solitary males to enter (immigrate into) their groups so that they will fight with them in the hostile encounters with neighboring groups.
